Taking Care Of My Smile

Today is a big day for this lady.. and my teeth.

I had a routine cleaning last week and my sweet hygienist informed me that I have one teeny tiny itty bitty cavity.

I cannot believe I have my first cavity.

I have been so bummed about this whole thing. I have always had amazing teeth. Naturally straight, no braces for me. I've never had to do whitening treatments, root canals, or any of that yucky stuff. The only major incident with my teeth was in high school when I had my wisdom teeth removed.

But here I am, in my late twenties with my first cavity.

So, today I have the pleasure of going to get it filled. It's very small, so they said it wouldn't require shots, numbing, or gas. There's the bright side!

I am thankful for my sweet hygienist and wonderful dentist. My hygienist is actually a dear friend and fellow church member, so I'm looking at it as a visit to see a friend rather than going for a cavity filling. Another bright side!

Here's to a cavity free smile!

Raising A Daughter After God's Own Heart

In light of Miley's recent {and now infamous} VMA performance, people have been stepping forward giving their opinions.

I've seen everything from hate comments to prayers being said for her.

If you are a Mom, I hope it has sparked something inside you. I hope it leaves you with a new understanding of the importance of raising your children to love and honor Christ. Sometimes I think of what the world will hold for my daughter when she's my age- it always frightens me and leaves me realizing the importance of preparing her now for the spiritual warfare she is destined to face in the future.

I want her to know that the love of Jesus is something she should treasure. The world's love is fickle and nothing to be desired. Instead of longing for acceptance from the world, I pray she will chase after Jesus even if it means doing so alone. I want her to know that she is His beloved.

I had a post of my own in mind for this topic, but after reading what my sweet friend Staci over at Luker Family Tales wrote, I had to re-post. It is exactly how I feel. I hope you'll take the time to read it {you can find it here}.

If you are raising a daughter, may I recommend an awesome book to help put things in perspective for you. I read it shortly after having Mary Grace..

It's never to soon to start helping shape your child into the person they were created to be- someone who brings glory and praise to God.

Leo Half

One item on my bucket list: run a half marathon.

I wanted to post about my current running status as a way to hold myself accountable. At the beginning of the summer I was preparing for the Women's Running 1/2 Marathon in Nashville. Minor foot surgery took me out of the game for a few weeks, and you know how it goes when you take a break.

I've been looking for someone as crazy as me to train with- and I found that someone in my sweet friend, Missouri Momma. We are getting ready for the Leo Run to Remember 1/2. We are 12 weeks out- plenty of time to train.

No excuses.

Happy running!

Friday Five {link up #8}

Oh happy day, it's Friday lovelies! You know what that means- another fun filled link up with my blogging friend, Joy. Check out her Friday Five, along with others who have linked up. We'd love for you to join us!

One. Chooze Shoes
If you see my child out and about in two different shoes, please don't think I've finally lost my mind. We picked up this adorable pair of Chooze Shoes at The Berry Patch- the idea behind them is to chooze to be different. Along with being adorable, proceeds to go to help families in poverty.

Two. Cozy Coupe
Mima brought this by and it is a huge hit. She is in love with her little coupe and insists we push her constantly. She even tries to fill up the gas cap with her sippy cup- too cute. If you have a little one, I highly recommend investing in one of these. The only thing I would change is the handle- they make a similar style with a wagon handle. My back would have benefited from a longer handle.

Three. Fall Atire
I'm excited to see a few lovely Fall pieces showing up on some of my favorite online shops. I love these looks I found via Pinterest. Scarves, boots, sweaters.. oh my!

Four. Avon's Banana Coconut Bath Wash
My friend, T, has recently started selling Avon. I was super excited to order one of my favorites- the Banana Coconut Bath wash. She threw in the lotion and body spray as a bonus. Score! It's the little things in life that make me happy.

Five. Time With Family and Friends
Last weekend, Mima {my mom} came over for a visit, followed by lunch and shopping with my bestie, Chickadee. Monday we had a late morning visit from T. Tuesday I had a fun little sewing class with my friend Missouri Momma. This weekend we are gearing up for a fun little sweet sixteen birthday party, complete with time spent with cousins playing in the pool. Not to mention, Granny {Bob's mom} is coming down and we are super excited at the chance for a date night.

Happy Friday, Lovelies!

Little Artist

I love doing artwork with kids. As a teacher, it was always my favorite time of day. Now, I get to do all those adorable, messy projects with my wee one.

Art supplies make us happy, happy, happy.

Finished masterpieces

Little one made this in her Sunday school class. Love those little scribbles!

Display Dilemna.
I've been brainstorming ways to display our little artist's masterpieces. Our stainless steel fridge is only magnetic on the sides- boo. Thus, I've had to look for ideas on how to display our lovelies in ways other than cluttering the fridge. I hit up pinterest and found some cute ideas. This is our art wall today- but I'm planning to add some cute chalkboard decals, ribbon, and pins to make a cutesy display.
 Pitiful, I know.

Inspirations
I'm thinking this design will work best for the narrow area beside our fridge.

Love the quote.

Here are some Pinterest inspired projects we cannot wait to try.

Perfect for Daddy to hang in his shop!

Great little happy for the grands.

Reminds me of the Halloween cards we made last year.

Here's to fun times spent making art!

Perfection Facades

The topic of social media influences on young girls came up during our Sunday school class. I've been meaning to post on this for months now, but it took me a while to get it down the way I wanted it.

Our conversation was centered around a conference one of our friend's attended with our youth. It exposed how instagram, facebook, and even blogs set up facades of perfect lives. It made me think about my own social media profiles- specifically this blog.

In recent months I've tried to include the good, beautiful, but also sometimes ugly sides of our life. I've tried showing you all that it is not always rainbows and sunshine. That's still hard to do though. I'm always the together girl. Only pictures that I feel are good go up on instagram, facebook, and this blog. Honestly, who wants the world to see them first thing in the morning with no makeup looking a hot mess. Not this lady. I avoid sharing pictures that have piles of laundry in the background or dirty dishes in the sink.

Having said that- I think we all want to put our best face forward when it comes to what we put out there for the world to see. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, as long as we still show reality, and not build a facade of a perfect, happy go lucky life. Because no one's life is perfect- especially mine.

I had decided not to talk about this on the blog and shoved it to the back of my mind. A few weeks went by and once again it was brought to my attention- this time in a different way. I had stopped by our church one afternoon to pray- I love going when it's quiet and I'm alone with Jesus. Our pastor lives right next door, and I would never stop if they were home. Not because I dislike them, but because I had no intention of them seeing this together girl come apart as a crying mess at the altar. On this particular day, I stopped and poured my heart out before God. You know what's coming right? Our sweet pastor's wife came in and sat beside me. I was mortified and immediately began apologizing for the tears, snot, and ruined mascara. She said something that has stuck with me: It's important for people to see that others are struggling too. Otherwise, we think we are alone in our trials and thus fear revealing our hurts.

So. Very. True.

I've been told that based on what people see of me and my life here on the blog and facebook, it appears we have it all figured out. To be honest though, looking out, I perceive that quite differently. I try to be open and honest with all of you, but I am here to speak to the fact that life isn't always easy. Our life isn't always easy.

Yes, we have a comfortable lifestyle, have been blessed with our precious Mary Grace,  have a beautiful home at the lake, have wonderful family and friends... You get the picture. I'm not trying to brag, I just want to show that by taking a quick peak into someone's life, it can seem like things are pretty perfect. But, I do want to let you know we go through the normal day-to-day struggles, too. Take our home for instance, I would sell it and downsize in a minute if given the chance. We're actually thinking of putting it on the market. Another example, right now we are in the middle of a huge shift in our lives- one that I'm still not quite sure about. I could potentially be a SAHM of sorts and that makes this career lady lose sleep at night.

Everyone has their fair share of struggles and secret issues that haunt them daily- I am no different.
  • I come from a broken home and have always longed for the lives of my friends who come from homes where Mom and Dad are still in love after 30 years. Where they have one home to go to for holidays and special occasions. My parents barely speak to each other, so holiday functions are always divided.
  • I moved around a lot and went to 10 different schools from K - 12. I wish I had roots, but all I can do is start growing them now.
  • Bob and I disagree and argue just like every other married couple. If you say you have the perfect marriage, then you're better than us.
  • I am a planner - Bob is not. I want to plan out our budgets, savings, Mary Grace's high school days, and every other detail of our lives. Bob goes with the flow and it drives me nuts. Most of the time we are on the same page, but sometimes we are not.
  • Mommyhood overwhelms me daily and there are times I just need a timeout. With the exception of one hour Friday afternoon, I've literally been with my child 24/7 since last Tuesday. If anyone portrays parenting to be glamorous- they are lying to cover their own fears and shortcomings.
  • I am the most insecure person you'll ever meet. I obsess over what others think and say about me. I'm working on being my own measuring stick, but it's still hard.
  • I am the clumsiest, ditsiest, most forgetful person. Haven't noticed it? That's because I try oh so hard to cover it up. Just ask my friend, Chickadee. For example, while trying on shoes for MG I misplaced one of her socks. The poor sales lady was looking everywhere. Embarrassing.
I am already regretting airing my dirty laundry per say, but I'm trying to make the point that although I may not always talk about them, like everyone else I have daily struggles.

For instance, I mentioned my fabulous trip to Birmingham. What I left out was the fact that my battery went dead on day one of the conference and I was embarrassed to ask the instructor to help out. After failed attempts to jump it off, I ended up having to purchase a new battery. It was not the glamorous start to my trip I had envisioned.  Need another example? You won't find this in the pictures of our trip to Callaway Gardens- during our second night a scorpion somehow managed to snuggle up with me in bed and sting my left arm, which resulted in a 4 a.m trip to the ER. To top it off, sweet Mary Grace's face was eat up by what we later identified as spider bites. Yuck! Needless to say, our vacation was cut short.

See. My life is far from glamorous. Days filled with rainbows and sunshine are few and far between. It's rarity when things go as smoothly as I have planned. Each day has it's own struggles, but I try and find the good in each day I'm given.

I say all of this to make this point: Don't compare yourself to others. Don't beat yourself up because all you see of others' lives are the glamorous high points they portray via instagram, facebook, or even blogs. They are only human and struggle daily too, just like you.

Here's to living a perfectly imperfect life!

Friday Five {link up # 7}

One. Autumn
This is the part of Summer where the heat starts getting the best of me and I start counting down the days until Fall. For some reason, as soon as Independence Day comes and goes, I'm ready for Autumn. I'm dreaming of those crisp, cool mornings, Fall colors, change in wardrobe, pumpkins... oh I could go on and on.

Two. Bunting
My friend and I ( T over at My Beauti{full} Life) are taking a bunting class next week and I am oh so excited! I'm hoping to make some cute fall designs for our home- and for Sew Southern, of course :)

Three. Time
I'm so thankful for the time I am getting to spend with my sweet daughter. I'm beginning to look forward to the possibility of being a SAHM. You read correctly- more on this to come.

Four. Shark Week
Finally, something worth watching on TV (other than our usual Mickey Mouse). I am terrified of large, open bodies of water and Shark Week always confirms that a cruise is out of the question.

Five. Umbrella Stroller
I was the mom who just had to have that expensive jogging stroller. Granted, if we take a stroll around the lake, then it is a must due to the rough roads. Having said that, I love having this lightweight stroller to push around while out shopping, etc... Worth the $20- plus, in our house, you can't go wrong with Minnie Mouse.

Happy Friday,blogland!

Friday Five {link up #6}

It has been a month since I fell off the Friday Five band wagon. I have been a slacker as of late- time to hop back on board!
One. Hello Vacation!
Today marks our first full day on vacay and we are excited to be exploring beautiful Callaway Gardens with our family. We are here in celebration of Nanny's {Bob's grandmother} 85th birthday! Needless to say, anytime the whole {and I mean everyone} family goes on vacation, it's bound to be fun, crazy, and full of adventure.

I have so much on my to-do list while here: Butterfly House with Mary Grace, zip lining, strolls around the grounds, swimming.... Oh what fun! A full recap will be up first thing Monday morning.
I do plan on visiting this gorgeous little chapel! Love!

Two. Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker
Heaven in a bowl, I tell you. Bob's grandmother, Nanny, makes the yummiest ice cream on Sundays. My husband, who is somewhat of a connoisseur when it come to this frozen treat, sent me on a mission to get one for ourselves. Gone are the days of waiting hours around a loud machine, while mixing salt and ice.... hello quick, easy, and ready in twenty. Seriously, it is ready to go in twenty minutes flat. So far we've made vanilla, Oreo blast, and strawberry. All sinfully delicious. Just one bowl is impossible.

Oreo Blast in the making

Three. Follow Me by David Platt
Bob and I recently started on this daily Bible study, and it is oh so good. Very eye opening- but be warned, it is guaranteed to step on your toes, which we all need in a way.  We read The Radical by David Platt a couple of years ago and loved it- so when I came across his study Follow Me, it was a must. After starting ours, we learned our men's group is doing the same study, and as a result a lot of our Sunday messages have corresponded with it- which is even better.

Four. Treehouse Masters
Ok, has anyone else seen this show? I am addicted. It's the craziest thing- they build the most amazing, I mean amazing, treehouses. They are fully livable- some even include spa steam showers. Confession time: I want to sell my house and live in one of these beauties. If this has sparked your interest, new episodes air Friday nights on Animal Planet.

Five.  Blogging Face-Lift
This little blog is currently gearing up for a massive make-over. I'm talking new colors, designs, and name. You read correctly: new name. I cannot wait for the big reveal!

Happy Friday from Georgia!
